FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about the Dry Toilet and More!
Is toilet paper allowed in the toilet?
Is toilet paper allowed in the toilet?
Short and simple: Yes! This is one of the most common questions – and completely understandable.
With all BioTioo models, including the version with the stirring mechanism, you can easily put regular household toilet paper into the toilet.
The stirring mechanism automatically shreds the paper as it turns – this ensures everything is evenly mixed and optimally supports the composting process.
So you don’t have to separate anything, dispose of paper separately, or use special paper. Just put it in.
How does a dry separation toilet work?
How does a dry separation toilet work?
A quick note upfront: No, it doesn’t stink 😉 In a separating toilet, urine and feces do not come into contact with each other. This reliably prevents the formation of unpleasant odors. Because it is only through the contact of urine and feces that certain enzymes become active, causing the notorious “outhouse smell” of days gone by. With a dry separating toilet, no flushing is necessary. Dry feces don’t smell, and the urine tank is reliably sealed by a mechanical odor trap (this is unique to BioTioo). After use, you can simply clean the urine basin with a spray bottle and just a little water – done.
How is "flushing" actually done with BioTioo?
How is "flushing" actually done with BioTioo?
Inside the BioTioo there are two containers. The front canister collects the urine. In the rear container, there is a granulate made from natural coconut fibers. These biodegradable fibers have the property of absorbing a lot of moisture and then releasing this moisture only gradually. To "flush" after the "big business," the crank attached to the side of the toilet is turned 2-3 times. This immediately covers the feces with the coconut fibers. This prevents unpleasant odors from rising because the feces are completely enveloped by the coconut fibers, and it also begins to dry immediately. In the urine area, a dry separation toilet normally does not flush. The reason: contact of urine with cold water causes urine scale to form. Dissolved lime and other dissolved substances in the water combine with urine and uric acid as a catalyst to form a lime-magnesium compound insoluble in water. However, urine scale deposits can be dissolved with a mixture of water and vinegar or vinegar essence. This mixture can also be used to clean the urine basin after using the toilet or in the evening without causing urine scale to form.
Is special toilet paper necessary?
Is special toilet paper necessary?
No, regular household toilet paper can be used. Paperless cleaning with water is also no problem. However, since this introduces more moisture into the coconut granulate, the fan should then run continuously to ventilate.
Can the BioTioo replace a regular cassette toilet?
Can the BioTioo replace a regular cassette toilet?
Yes, absolutely. The BioTioo housing is already prepared for permanent installation in motorhomes, caravans, boats, or tiny houses: there are pre-made mounting points on the back and bottom of the housing to screw the BioTioo to the wall or floor. To conveniently reach the two locks between the toilet bowl and the housing during wall mounting, a slim mounting kit is in preparation. Since the disposal of the urine tank and the solid waste container is done conveniently from above, no service hatch is needed in the outer wall. By the way: the solid waste container can be easily removed upwards, while the housing remains as a unit in the vehicle. With competitors, the toilet must be disassembled every time to empty the solid waste container. And then the toilet bowl has to be placed somewhere in the vehicle somehow...
How long are the emptying intervals?
How long are the emptying intervals?
With a dry separation toilet, a distinction must be made between emptying the urine tank and the solid waste container. The BioTioo urine tank has a usable volume of 9.9 liters. An adult produces an average of 1.5 liters daily. This results in an emptying interval of about 6.5 days when used by one person. For two people, the urine tank must be emptied after 3 days. This also matches practical experience. The solid waste container has a usable volume of about 12 liters. Through the drying process combined with the stirring mechanism, the excretions are strongly compressed. Since feces contain up to 80 percent water, the solid waste container typically needs to be emptied after about 14 days when used by two people. Because the feces do not smell at all after drying, the solid waste container only actually needs to be emptied when it is full. With occasional use, the dry feces can remain in the coconut granulate. There is then no reason to empty it. (a crucial difference from the usual chemical toilet!!!)
