FAQ – Frequently asked questions about composting toilets and more!
Is it okay to put toilet paper in the toilet?
Is it okay to put toilet paper in the toilet?
In short: Yes! This is one of the most frequently asked questions – and completely understandable.
With all BioTioo models, including the version with a stirring mechanism, you can easily put regular household toilet paper into the toilet.
The agitator automatically shreds the paper as it rotates – this ensures everything is mixed evenly and optimally supports the composting process.
So you don't need to separate anything, dispose of any paper separately, and you don't need any special paper. Just put it all in.
How does a dry-separating toilet work?
How does a dry-separating toilet work?
First things first: No, it doesn't stink 😉 With a composting toilet, urine and feces don't come into contact. This reliably prevents unpleasant odors from developing. It's only through contact between urine and feces that certain enzymes are activated, creating the infamous "outhouse smell" of yesteryear. With a composting toilet, flushing isn't necessary. Dry feces don't smell, and the urine tank is reliably sealed by a mechanical odor trap (only available with the BioTioo). After use, the urine bowl can simply be cleaned with a spray bottle and a tiny bit of water – that's it.
How exactly does the BioTioo process "rinse"?
How exactly does the BioTioo process "rinse"?
The BioTioo toilet contains two containers. The front canister collects urine. The rear container holds granules made of natural coconut fibers. These biodegradable fibers have the property of absorbing a large amount of moisture and then releasing it gradually. To flush after defecation, the crank located on the side of the toilet is turned two to three times. This immediately covers the feces with the coconut fibers. This prevents unpleasant odors from rising, and because the feces are completely encased in the coconut fibers, they also begin to dry immediately. The urine compartment of a dry-separating toilet is not normally flushed. The reason: Urine scale forms when urine comes into contact with cold water. Dissolved calcium and other dissolved substances combine with the urine and uric acid (which acts as a catalyst) to form a calcium-magnesium compound that is insoluble in water. However, any limescale deposits that do form can be dissolved with a mixture of water and vinegar or concentrated vinegar. This mixture can also be used to clean the urinal after using the toilet or in the evening, without the formation of limescale.
Is special toilet paper necessary?
Is special toilet paper necessary?
No, regular household toilet paper can be used. Cleaning without paper using water is also perfectly fine. However, since this introduces more moisture into the coconut granules, the fan should then be running continuously.
Can the BioTioo replace a conventional cassette toilet?
Can the BioTioo replace a conventional cassette toilet?
Yes, absolutely. The BioTioo housing is already prepared for permanent installation in motorhomes, caravans, boats, or tiny houses: Pre-drilled mounting points are located on the back and bottom of the housing for screwing the BioTioo to the wall or floor. A slim mounting kit is in development to ensure easy access to the two latches between the toilet bowl and the housing during wall mounting. Since the urine tank and solids container are conveniently emptied from the top, a service hatch in the exterior wall is no longer necessary. Incidentally, the solids container can be easily removed from the top, and the housing remains as a single unit in the vehicle. With competing systems, the toilet has to be disassembled every time the solids container is emptied. And then the toilet bowl has to be placed somewhere in the vehicle...
How long are the emptying intervals?
How long are the emptying intervals?
With a dry-separating toilet, a distinction must be made between emptying the urine tank and the solids container. The BioToi urine tank has a usable volume of 9.9 liters. An adult produces an average of 1.5 liters per day. This results in an emptying interval of approximately 6.5 days when used by one person. With two people, the urine tank needs to be emptied after 3 days. This aligns with practical experience. The solids container has a usable volume of approximately 12 liters. Due to the drying process in combination with the agitator, the waste is highly compressed. Since feces contain up to 80 percent water, experience shows that the solids container needs to be emptied after approximately 14 days when used by two people. Because the feces are odorless after drying, the solids container only needs to be emptied when it is actually full. For occasional use, the dried feces can remain in the coconut granules. There is therefore no need to empty it. (A crucial difference to a conventional chemical toilet!!!)
