Are you wondering if your composting toilet needs a fan? Short answer: If you use your dry composting toilet in an enclosed space, like in a camper, motorhome, or tiny house, a ventilation system makes a huge difference. The fan transports moisture and odors outside, without water and without chemicals. The solids dry faster, condensation inside the housing is avoided, and use remains odor-free.
How does the fan work in a composting toilet?
The fan in a composting toilet creates a slight negative pressure in the solid waste container. This causes moist air to be drawn out through a ventilation hose. Before exiting, the exhaust air passes through an activated carbon filter that traps odor particles. This keeps everything odor-free outside as well.
Most fan kits operate on 12V, making them suitable for mobile use in campers where a vehicle battery is already available. Some models also offer a 5V USB connection. The power consumption is minimal; even in continuous operation, you barely notice it on your battery.
Composting toilet with or without a fan?
A dry composting toilet also works without a fan, but only with good natural ventilation, such as in a garden with an open door. For enclosed spaces, a ventilation system is almost always recommended. Here are the main advantages:
-
Odor reduction: Continuous extraction prevents odors from spreading in your camper or tiny house.
-
Faster drying: The solids dry more quickly. This supports composting with coconut fibers and extends your emptying intervals.
-
Less moisture: No condensation inside the housing, especially suitable for compact installations.
The downsides? A fan requires power and an outlet to the outside via a ventilation pipe or hose. Also, even quiet fans produce minimal operating noise. For most campers, however, this is not a problem.
The BioTioo fan kit in detail
We developed our fan kit specifically for all BioTioo dry composting toilets. The 12V fan ensures constant air circulation and is made in Germany. You can get it as a 90° angle or straight version, depending on what fits your installation. Both versions support continuous operation and interval mode.
The package includes the fan unit, connection angle, ventilation hose (1.5 m), switch unit, and all mounting small parts. Thanks to the modular design, the kit can be retrofitted at any time, whether BioTioo 2.0 B, RL, or RL-Motion. The ventilation kit always fits.
Installation and connection: It's that easy
Installation is possible even without prior knowledge. The fan is attached to the solid waste container or housing. From there, a ventilation hose or pipe (typically 75 mm) leads through the wall or floor to the outside. For 12V models, the vehicle battery is sufficient for connection; for 5V, a power bank is enough. For stationary use in a garden house, there are fan sets with 230V.
Our tip for you: Use the interval mode when the composting toilet is not in use. This saves power and is still sufficient for reliable ventilation.
