BioTioo RL or RL-Motion: two upgrade levels, one system

BioTioo RL oder RL-Motion: zwei Ausbaustufen, ein System

The BioTioo 2.0 RL and the BioTioo 2.0 RL-Motion are the same toilet; the difference lies in the drive of the stirring mechanism. With the RL, you turn the hand crank, while the RL-Motion uses the TiooMotion motor with TiooTronic control. This is how we have deliberately structured the product line: a common base, two upgrade levels, and a retrofit path in between, so that neither decision is final.

The Common Base

The housing, separation, closure, and containers are identical in both models. This includes the stainless steel housing measuring 388 × 390 × 332 mm, the separation insert with two-pedestal seat, the SmellX odor trap, the 10-liter urine tank, and the 15-liter solid waste container with patented stirring mechanism. Both models feature a 12-V fan with 1 watt power, and both come with the hand crank, with the RL-Motion including it as a backup for power outages. The bowl and lid are made of cold-impact-resistant PP-C, the construction supports 200 kg, and both operate in compost and bag modes; the operating mode logic is explained in One housing, two operating modes.

This equality is intentional. The RL is not a stripped-down model, and the RL-Motion is not a new start; anyone who buys the RL today owns the same toilet as the RL-Motion user, just with a different drive. How the stirring mechanism mixes and dries is explained in the Stirring Mechanism Function.

What the Motor Changes

The timer-controlled stirring mechanism stirs automatically after the lid is closed, optionally also at intervals, for example every 30 minutes. The TiooMotion motor runs bidirectionally, forward and backward, instead of turning in only one direction. This allows it to mix the container contents more evenly than a single-direction drive, and it dries independently of who last used the toilet. The product page summarizes this function with the phrase: “Lid closed. Motor does the rest.” Details about the drive source and the blockage protection are in the factory note Motor and Hand Crank as a Hybrid.

The TiooTronic is housed under the toilet seat and controls three functions: stirring intervals, day/night mode, and child lock. The night mode switches the toilet to a quiet operation via a toggle switch. The child lock normally allows stirring only when the lid is closed and can be deactivated if needed. Electrically, the system is efficient: 12-V connection, 4-A fuse, 1.7 to 2.5 A current draw, and a stirring cycle lasts only a few seconds.

The honest limitation of the motor: it requires 12 V onboard power. Without an onboard power supply, there is no automatic operation; then you simply attach the crank tool-free on one of the two sides and turn it yourself. What basically works without power is shown in Fully functional without power.

The Retrofit Path from Generation 2.0

The motor is part of a modular system and fits into over 4,000 existing BioTioo housings. The prerequisite is the 2.0 bowl. Owners of a 1.0 housing first replace the bowl and separation insert with the 2.0 set; the housing remains installed since the external dimensions of both generations are identical. Self-installation takes about 30 minutes, and the motor can be mounted on either the left or right side of the housing. The Motor Bundle 2.0 Plus includes everything needed, and the shop offers suitable bundles for both generations. The reason why motor and crank are designed as a permanent dual drive is explained in Motor and Hand Crank as a Hybrid.

Why We Permanently Offer Two Drives in Parallel

The RL is not a discontinued model alongside the RL-Motion but an equally valid, deliberately simpler line. A purely mechanical drive without electronics remains the more robust choice for installation situations without reliable onboard power or for those who want as little technology onboard as possible. The motor provides an advantage where multiple people share the same toilet or guests ride along who are not familiar with a crank routine: consistent stirring regardless of the user.

This division is not a compromise between the two lines but the reason why the motor is designed as a standalone retrofit module. Purchasing an RL is therefore never a final decision against the motor, only a later one.

Availability

Both versions come from our production in Überlingen on Lake Constance: the BioTioo 2.0 in variants B, BL, R, and RL as well as the BioTioo 2.0 RL-Motion. The equipment comparison is available in the overview of Dry Separation Toilets. We offer a 3-year warranty on the bowl and lid, plus a 60-day return policy.
